Gardening! A Solution for Depressed Minds




With all its blessings modern world has also produced severe types of problems regarding health. Life is easy, fast and facilitated now. Psychological problems have increased especially depression. Man has done his best to have calm, healthy and peaceful environment but due to high margin of difference between lifestyles and other monstrous events in individual life, man is an easy victim of stress and depression. Studies have shown that modern society of USA has more depression ratio than those Hadza tribes live in dark world of Africa. Moving in early ages to slow and steady evolutionary stages of human brain, whenever man encountered with danger he tried to get rid of it. Stress hormones release and it produces muscular contraction enabling the body to run away from that situation. When the episodes of fear come again and again, it also releases large amount of stress hormones which causes permanent depression. Depression is also seen in animals. An experiment was conducted in which a fish was kept in tub and whenever it arrived on the surface; by hitting it slowly it was sent back to the bottom. This process was repeated many times and then fish was so depressed that it never appeared on the surface. Depression shrinks brain and disturbs hormonal and body’s communication system of brain affecting its abilities of thinking and memory too. A continuous fear develops, leading to many psychological complications.

Basic reason of depression is that gap which has produced between man and that peaceful and simple natural environment. Horticultural or gardening therapy dates back to era of Socrates. Gardening allows man to spend time with Nature, to create his own world and to build a strong relation between man and nature, just like parents and children. One bloom brings sight of happiness, and 1st flower makes man as happier as he could be. It releases satisfactory hormones; dopamine and serotonin, thus helps in pleasant mood and favorable behavior. Gardening brings happiness, satisfaction, love, emotions of care and dedication in ones’ life. It produces sense of responsibility and beautiful healthy feelings. Gardening can be used as a tool to bring real pleasure back to the depressed minds. Experience little amount of happiness everyday; spend your time in garden to keep yourself fresh. Get your hands dirty in moist soil and feel yourself close to the nature, where you really belong.
