Depression - Causes, Types and Solutions

Depression is defined as phenomenon in which we feel sad ,gloomy,down for the long period of time.Depression is common but serious illness.Depression is the illness of brain.In depression the important neurotransmitters are out of balance.They have decrease amount of plasma tryptophan, seratogenic function abnormalities and lower level of brain serotonin.The brain of depress people looks different from those of without depression.The parts of brain including sleep ,appetite,mood,thinking and behaviour appear different.

 Symptoms of Depression


The following are the symptoms of depression  :

  • Persistent sad  ,anxious and gloomy feelings

  • Feeling guilty, hopeless and helpless

  • Fatigue and loss of energy

  • Insomnia or hypersomnia

  •  Lack of interest in every day activities ,hobbies

  • Loss of weight or gain

  • frequent pains,headaches,cramps or digestive problems

  • Over eating or appetite loss

Causes of depression


Depression in not caused by single factor .Many  factors combine to lead to depression.We can summarize those causes as following:


  • Genetic:


Depression can be transmitted through genes i-e it can run in families.


  • Biochemical:


    Depression is caused by the improper functioning of  neurotransmitters.

  • Hormonal :


    Changes in the hormones of the body may lead to depression like in child birth  .


  • Seasonal:


Seasonal changes are also the cause of depression.


  •   Situational :


Depression can be cause by changes in situation such as loss of loved one ,a difficult relationship etc.

Types Of Depression


Major depressive disorder


Major depressive disorder is also known as unipolar depression is a serious type of depression in which feelings of sadness,anxiety,loss,anger remain for weeks or months .At least four symptoms of depression must be present. People with this disorder are more likely to use alcohols or illegal substances due to which they face other mental and physical problems.

Bipolar Illness


It is the type of depression in which there are mood episodes that range between extreme high energy(mania) to low energy (depression) .In between episodes person feels normal.It is also known as Manic depression .Mania is basically persistently high energy mood with less requirement  of sleep,excess of ideas ,plenty of pleasurable activities or insistent goal directed activities .

Dsythymia


It is the type of depression which is mild but it is a long term depression.In dsythymia the depression longs for more than two years.People with this depression can also experience periods of major depression that's why it is also known as double depression.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

It is the kind of depression in which depressive episodes occur during particular season.It is usually linked with late autumn and winter.It is thought that seasonal affective is caused due to the low intensity of sunlight.

General Anxiety Disorder


It is the kind of depression in which there is excessive worry about various matter of daily life such as work,social relationship etc. In this depression the person feel unusual worry for more than 6 months or more.

Panic Disorder


It is the type of disorder in which there are panic attacks.Panic attacks occur without any reason.The panic attacks are followed by extreme of having another attack.In this disorder person having panic attack may have some  of the following physical symptoms such as sweating,difficulty in breathing,chest pain,chills and hot flashes.

 Depression in woman


Depression is more common in woman than men.Biological life cycle ,hormonal changes and psychological factors leads to higher rate of depression in woman.The types and causes of depression that can be seen in woman are the following


  • Post-partum depression:

It is the type of depression which can be found in woman after giving birth to new born baby.


  • Premenstrual phosphoric disorder:


    Woman may suffer depression before menstruation  cycle begins this  premenstrual syndrome is known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder.It is linked with hormonal changes in ovulation and before menstruation begin.



  • Menopause


    Menopause also cause hormonal  changes in woman and it leads to depression.

Solution of depression


The first step in the solution of depression is the diagnosis of the depression.It is only possible to treat depression once it is properly diagnosed .Several symptoms of depression are same as other physical disorders such as typhoid so diagnosis by doctor is necessary.After its clear that all those symptoms are due to depression then one should go for the proper solution of depression.Followings are the ways to move out of depressed life

Natural ways by which one can avoid depression are the following:

  • Indulge yourself in proper routine

  • Take proper sleep

  • Challenge negative thoughts and try to look at their positive aspect

  • Try to have fun and enjoy good moments of your life.

Psychotherapy


If one have tried all the above mentioned things and still  feeling well then should consult psychologist for psychotherapy .Psychotherapy  known as "Talk Therapy"  is used to treat mild and moderate depression.Psychotherapy has two types

  •   Cognitive behavioural therapy

  •    Interpersonal therapy

 Cognitive behavioural therapy

This therapy  help to restructure negative thought patterns by showing positive aspects.By this depressed people can interpret their problems in positive and realistic way
 Interpersonal therapy

This therapy help to solve out troubled relationships that may cause depression.
Electro-convulsive Therapy

In severe depression when psychotherapy is not working the other type of therapy is electro convulsive therapy.In this therapy electrical impulses are given by making patient unconscious by giving anaesthesia. With in one hour the patient is alert and awake.Some people need only few sessions of ECT .
Medication

Along with these therapies medication is also required.Antidepressants mainly work on the brain chemicals called neurotransmitters especially serotonin.These chemicals are involved in regulating mood and antidepressants work on these chemicals.
